The Journey

Universe Visions is excited to partner with amateur astrophotographer and artist Tom Johnson—a stargazing enthusiast who discovered his love for the cosmos later in life. Tom’s journey into astrophotography began in 2020, when his wife surprised him with an inexpensive telescope for casual stargazing. What started as a fun experiment with star maps and a quest to locate the planets and grand objects like the Orion Nebula quickly grew into something much bigger.

The Dream

Tom found that the thrill of identifying these dazzling sights sparked a desire to capture them on camera. He wanted to capture not only the bright and bold, but also those hidden, fainter details of the universe that are invisible to the naked eye. His early nights spent learning the layout of the sky paved the way for a new passion: imaging the cosmos.

Soon enough, Tom upgraded his setup. He invested in advanced gear to bring his celestial vision to life. His collection now includes a William Optics Zenithstar 73 Apo—a gem for capturing sharp, clear images—and a Celestron 8″ Schmidt-Cassegrain, along with multiple dedicated astrophotography cameras designed to capture the minutest details of the night sky. This gear helps him reveal the beauty of smaller, fainter objects and share the wonders of space in a way that’s accessible and relatable.
